he two houses received their names
because of the color with which their were painted in 1800/1820. Samuel Werenfels had constructed them for the brothers
Lukas and Jakob Sarasin. The family-name Sarasin is probably one of the most known in Basel. Among other things, the
Sarasins were active in the silk-spinning business through which they became know far beyond the Swiss borders. This kind
of business helped the whole region to an economical growth at the beginning of the century.
In 1814/1815, the emperor Franz of Austria was a guest in the blue house (Jakob Sarasin). Today, it servers the cantonal
authorities.
